Lychee
Native to the Guangdong and Fujian provinces of southeastern China, lychee is a small fruit with juicy white flesh and bumpy pink peel from the lychee tree. In the 1st century during the Han dynasty, fresh lychees were a popular tribute item, and in such demand at the Imperial Court that a special courier service would regularly bring the fresh fruit from Guangdong. Unofficial documents refer to lychee cultivation as far back as 2000 BC.
Today, lychees are celebrated mostly for their high density in Vitamin C and remain a popular addition to traditional Chinese teas, due to their sweet, tropical flavor.
